Magazine project planning-research #1 People Magazine

The first magazine I chose to research, is People. The cover layout consists of a head-shot of Reese Witherspoon, with the words "My Family Christmas" to the left of her face, in bold letters to attract the reader's attention. Furthermore, the title of the magazine, People is displayed in the largest font, and is in bright red going right behind Reese's face in the center. Surrounding Reese's face, are tidbits about articles located in the magazine, with pictures associated with the content. For example, the words "Royal Secrets: the untold story of Queen Elizabeth" is right next to a picture of Queen Elizabeth with her crown on. Another article insight includes, "Goodbye to America's Dad" with a picture of Alan Thicke with the years of his life located under his chin. Overall, the cover page utilizes a color scheme of red, black and white, all of which contrast each-other and stand out among the smaller pictures. Furthermore, the magazine contains several different fonts, which is very eye-catching, as it doesn't appear to be monotone in terms of the text. Reese's article about her family Christmas is located in the middle of the magazine, as the cover article typically is. Moreover, the articles surrounding Reese's face on the front page are located directly before and after the main article. This magazine contains several advertisements, including some for T.V. shows such as The Wall and The New Celebrity Apprentice. Furthermore, the magazine contains ads for Splenda, a zero calorie sweetener, medicine for clear skin, Tylenol, and other medicines. Although the advertisements are scattered throughout the magazine, they are the most concentrated at the beginning and end, so as not to disturb the reader while enjoying the articles. The cover mostly consists of head-shots of several different people related to the articles within the magazine. The table of contents also includes pictures of celebrities, but more so full-body shots of them doing things such as cooking, or posing for a photo-shoot. The articles mostly contain shots of celebrities in action and doing things; for example, Reese Witherspoon is seen decorating her house for Christmas, and the article about Queen Elizabeth shows her waving to a crows. The circulation number for People magazine is 3,527,541. People magazine has been nominated for the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Magazine Overall Coverage.

Superbowl Ads: Product, Audience, and Advertising Techniques

The first commercial we viewed, was an ad for the NFL. The target audience would be predominantly men since that makes up the majority of their regular viewers. However, the commercial had two famous football players doing the dance with the song from the movie, Dirty  Dancing.  Therefore, this would attract more female viewers as this was seen as a chick-flick years ago, thus drawing in an adult female audience. Some techniques used, included having celebrities in the commercial as well as using humor to entice the audience. The next commercial was an ad for the Winter Olympics. This ad's target audience would be parents, kids involved in sports, and a female audience. This is because the techniques used included showing old home videos of Lindsey Vonn, which would strike a sentimental chord with parents, as well as relate to kids. The ad also utilized the power of emotions, which caused the viewer to feel inspired, empowered, and proud, thus prompting them to hopefully tune-...

Project Selection-Magazine

When considering print journalism, there are certain aspects that entice me the most. Based on the previous examples of print journalism that I have been exposed to, I am mostly attracted to the magazines, due to their range of creativity. Although print journalism based off of news and current events interests me, I believe where I live is more so focused on the arts, which will allow me to explore my creativity. Ever since I was a child, I have thoroughly enjoyed doing photography. Therefore, I believe the magazine will be a good fit for me, since I will be able to put my photographs to good use. However, this project may be challenging, if I fail to brainstorm creative ideas for articles to match my photo-shoots.  Furthermore, photography is widely based on lighting, so timing the photo-shoots to where the lighting fits the mood or theme I'm going for may be a challenge. Moreover, finding locations that will allow me to take pictures free of charge may also pose to be challengin...
